Best Fishing Spots on Georgian Bay Near Honey Harbour
Georgian Bay is one of the finest freshwater fishing destinations in North America, and Honey Harbour puts you right in the middle of it. Nestled at the southern tip of the 30,000 Islands — the world's largest freshwater archipelago — this area offers an extraordinary mix of species, structure, and scenery that keeps anglers coming back year after year.
Whether you're chasing trophy Muskie through rocky channels or dropping a jig for Walleye at dusk, here are the top spots our guests have been fishing for decades.
Top 5 Fishing Spots Near Honey Harbour
1. The 30,000 Islands — Inside Channels and Narrows
The labyrinth of islands, rock shoals, and weedy bays that make up the 30,000 Islands is the backbone of Georgian Bay fishing. The sheltered channels between islands are prime habitat for Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass throughout the season. Look for points, drop-offs along granite ledges, and the transitions between weed beds and open water.
Best for: Northern Pike (May–June, September), Smallmouth Bass (June–September)
Tackle tip: Weedless soft plastics for the thick stuff, crankbaits along rocky drop-offs
2. Little Lake
Little Lake is a sheltered inlet just minutes from Hall's Cottages — a favourite among guests with younger anglers. The calm, warmer water here hosts good numbers of Largemouth Bass, Perch, and the occasional Pike. It's ideal for early-morning topwater sessions before the day heats up.
Best for: Largemouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Northern Pike
Tackle tip: Topwater frogs and buzzbaits early morning, drop-shot rigs for midday Perch
3. Honey Harbour Channels and the Government Dock Area
The main channels running through Honey Harbour and around the Government Dock see strong tidal-like water movement with tides and wind, concentrating baitfish — and the predators that follow them. This is arguably the best location near the cottages for Walleye, especially in the evening. Fish the current seams and deeper edges of the channel from a boat.
Best for: Walleye (Pickerel), Northern Pike
Tackle tip: Jig-and-twister combos in chartreuse or white fished slowly along the bottom, or live minnows under a slip float
4. Beausoleil Island Shoals
Beausoleil Island (part of Georgian Bay Islands National Park) is about a 20-minute boat ride from Honey Harbour. The shallow shoals on its eastern and southern sides are excellent Walleye territory at dawn and dusk, while the rocky points hold Smallmouth Bass all summer. Drift-fishing with live nightcrawlers is highly effective here.
Best for: Walleye, Smallmouth Bass
Tackle tip: Nightcrawler harnesses trolled slowly over the shoals at 5–7 km/h, or jigs pitched to visible rock structure
5. Open Bay — Trophy Muskie Water
Venture further out into the open Georgian Bay and you're in Muskie territory. The main lake offers some of the most challenging and rewarding trophy fishing in Ontario. Muskie patrol the open-water weed edges and deeper basin areas between islands. Fish large bucktails, swimbaits, and figure-eight retrieves at boat side.
Best for: Muskie (late June–October)
Tackle tip: Heavy casting gear (15–20 kg line), large bucktails and rubber swimbaits; always use a steel leader. Patience is mandatory — Muskie are called "the fish of ten thousand casts" for good reason.
Seasonal Fishing Calendar
| Month | Best Species | Notes | |-------|-------------|-------| | May | Walleye, Pike | Season opener — fish are hungry and active | | June | Bass, Walleye, Pike | Bass open mid-June in Ontario | | July | Bass, Muskie | Summer peak; early/late is key | | August | Muskie, Bass | Trophy Muskie season in full swing | | September | Walleye, Pike, Muskie | Cooling water fires everything up | | October | Walleye, Pike | Big fish move shallow before close |
Tackle Tips by Location
For fishing the tight channels near Honey Harbour, lighter spinning gear (6–8 lb line) with small jigs or live bait keeps your presentation natural in the clear Georgian Bay water. Out on the open bay, step up to baitcasting gear with heavier line for Muskie and large Pike. Always carry a net, needle-nose pliers for quick releases, and a valid Ontario Fishing Licence — available online at ontario.ca/fishing.
Don't forget: Hall's Cottages offers 16-foot Lund aluminum fishing boats with Suzuki motors, perfect for exploring all these spots in comfort and safety.
